The Christmas Episode

(Season 1, Episode 47)

Plot Summary: A young boy named Melvin stays with the Monkees for Christmas when his aunt leaves to go on a holiday. The Monkees (especially Mike) try to engage Melvin in the spirit of Christmas, but he's too rich and snobby to go for it until the very end when he thinks about all the happy fun times with the guys.

Review/Rating:

Romp/Music Scene Summaries:
-We Wish You A Merry Christmas: Instrumental featuring the singers from the Fairy Tale music. Features a romp around the toy store with Melvin and the four guys. Butch Patrick cries a lot in this one.
-Riu Chiu: At the very end, the guys huddle around a microphone for a perfomance of this Monkees Christmas classic. Peter seems to find something really entertaining and tries to engage Mike, but Mike isn't paying attention.

Meet the Villains: No villains really, unless you count Melvin's aunt, Mrs. Vandersnoot, who goes on holiday and leaves her nephew in the care of four perfect strangers who are probably on drugs.

Here He Comes To Save The Day: All four Monkees can take credit for helping Melvin discover the Christmas spirit, but probably most of all Mike because of his lectures and for finally realizing what they were doing wrong.

Today's Lesson Is: Rich kids are all spoiled and don't know the meaning of Christmas, but if you lecture them and teach them how to smile and show them a good time, they have a fighting chance.

Outstanding Outfits:

The boys only really wear one set of outfits through the entire thing, and they're pretty cool. I like Peter's shirt especially! And I'm fond of Davy's nehru shirt with the buttons down the side.

Catchphrases/Running Jokes:
-Davy crying out for Mike's help

Pastor Mike: Mike delivers a speech to Melvin about the spirit of Christmas and smiling. Oh, and he educates us all on Christmas trees and the Golden Rule. And he finally realizes what Melvin needs is love. Lots and lots of Pastor Mike this episode.

Davy's Scale Of Obnoxiousness:

Personally, I hate it that Davy falls into the Christmas tree. Ass. And he was kind of obnoxious. I find that I just can't stand to look at him in this episode.

How Dumb Is He?: 2/5. Not too, too bad except for riding the motorcycle around the store and wracking up a henious amount of debt.

For The Win: 4/5
I just love the ending because of the "don we now our GAY apparel" line in the song. Haha. Micky and Davy own it.

Line Of The Episode: "Would you take my hand? It gives me a feeling of security." Micky and Melvin

Quotes:

"Would you accept four ladies who shave?" Mike

"What is he, the world's youngest midget?" Davy

Mike: This just isn't working out.
Peter: I would have expected more from you, Michael. Even I could have said that.

"Oh, that got me right in the kidneys!" Davy

"Ooh, moan, groan!" Peter

"I'm spry as the day I was born." Mike

Miscellaneous:
-Butch Patrick, the kid who plays Melvin, played Eddie Munster in The Munsters. Awesome.
